PBL on migration

The project’s overall goal is to raise awareness and promote accurate perceptions about migrants.

Aims of this project:
1- To investigate international and local migration flows.
2- To raise awareness of the reality of being a migrant in Cyprus
3- To investigate media representation of migrants in Europe and in Cyprus
4- To prepare an awareness campaign to make the local community better informed and more welcoming for migrants.

Step 2- Read all the tasks and choose the one you like. All tasks are to be completed.

Timeline/milestones
February 6th –March 30th 2017

  • Each class will be divided into 5/6 groups. 
  • After completing the introductory booklet, each group will choose a task from the list on this page.
  • Weekly check-ins will be held with the students to find out how the project is going and to set work for completion by the next check-in for each student/group.
  • Group page on Facebook for students to upload drafts. Click on this link to become a member. 
  • Deadline for drafts: March 10th 2017
  • Critique session: March 13-17th 2017
  • Deadline for final product: March 30th 2017
  • Exhibition and assembly: 3-6 May 2017.

Task 3: To investigate the reasons for migration (push and pull factors).
The final product could be an infographic, an animation, a presentation or a poster. The final product must visualise each factor.

Task 4: -Organisations which help economic migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in the world and Cyprus.
The final product could be an infographic, an animation, a presentation or a poster.

Tasks linked to aim 2: To raise awareness of the reality of being a migrant in Cyprus
– Economic migrants
– Asylum seekers and refugees

Task 5– Refugees and asylum seekers:
– Going to refugee camp (Kofinou) and interview refugees (video). Take photos of living conditions in camps.
– Find information on Cyprus laws.

This task will be completed by one group only.

Task 6- Interview economic migrants (video and photos).

Task 7- Migration at the American Academy
Create a questionnaire to be completed by students during mentor’s time. This questionnaire will include questions on origin and reasons for migration (first-generation and second-generation immigrants). If migrant students agree, a photomontage could be the end product, maybe on a map to show their origin and a video.

This task will be completed by two groups from the same class..

Task 8– Migration in the news in Europe

Find articles from newspapers, videos etc… Final product could be a presentation with newspaper headlines, videos and a poster for exhibition.

The leader of each group will keep a journal of individual student’s work.The leader of each group will be in charge of collecting the final products for the exhibition and the assemblies, supervised by the teachers.

 Assessment of the final product:
– No group marks.  Individual contribution will be Identified and assessed.
